En liten fredagsfråga till er där ute. Vilken bok har präglat dig mest?

För mig har det varit några böcker. Jag var rätt så ung när jag började läsa Stephen King, så han har en självklar plats i mitt läshjärta och jag blev väldigt förtjust (då) i Dead Zone. Andra böcker är (för det är en serie) Lilla Huset på prärien av Laura Wilder. Jag fullkomligt slukade dem och såg på tv-serien (såklart)

Freedom överallt!

Just nu recenseras Freedom lite överallt och alla verkar tala om boken av Jonathan Franzen. Theresa (Enbokcirkelförallas recensent från USA) läser Freedom just nu, så snart dyker det även upp en recension här.

Jag har hunnit läsa och recensera en del under Augusti och även gått på en del trevliga event. Jag har läst ut ”Den mentala orgasmen” av Pär Robert Öhlin, som även var en av våra bloggcirkelböcker i Augusti. Vidare har jag läst Barnen av Ida Jessen.  Vidare så har jag läst en till av Enbokcirkelförallas bloggcirkelböcker i Augusti och det var ”Låt den rätte komma in” av John Ajvide Lindqvist. Jag hann även med Tusenskönor av Kristina Ohlsson, ”Fallen Ängel” av Becca Fitzpatrick, Drottningen vänder blad av Alan Bennet,  Valkyriorna av Paulo Coelho, Jag skulle vara din hund (om jag finge vara i din närhet) av Anneli Jordahl, Konungens födelsedag av Hans Koppel och Död tills mörkret faller av Charlaine Harris.

Jag är ju inte den enda som recenserar böcker på bloggen, även Theresa gör det och Augusti har hon skrivit om böckerna Secrets in the Mist av Carloz Ruiz Zafon, Imperfect birds av Anne Lamott, On Writing: A memoir of the craft av Stephen King, Darkfever av Karen Marie Moning

Ja har också varit ute på kul event i Augusti. Först så gick jag på Mummingel på Formex sen blev det världens längsta bokbord på drottninggatan i Stockholm. Jag har även Minglat med Kristina Ohlsson på medelhavsmuséet i samband med realesen av hennes bok ”Tusenskönor” samt varit på Yourlife mingel. Och i slutet av Augusti så var jag på ungdomsbokfrukost hos Rabén och Sjögren.

 The Heretic’s Daughter by Kathleen Kent is a fictionalized account of the witch trials held in colonial Massachusetts. The novel chronicles life in 17th-century New England, from frontier skirmishes with the native Wabanaki, to smallpox, and the religious fervor of the Puritans. The reader is introduced to this world through the eyes of Sarah Carrier, daughter of strict yet loving parents Martha and Thomas. This is a story about family. In fact, Kathleen Kent is a tenth-generation descendant of Martha Carrier. It’s the intense relationship between Sarah and Martha, however, which lends weight to the novel’s narrative. Cool and aloof is the manner in which Martha runs her household, yet no one is spared from her biting words and quick intellect. Martha Carrier is a force to be reckoned with and I fell in love with the character. My affinity toward this strong woman is in sharp contrast to the shame and anger Sarah feels about her mother’s outspoken nature. A child’s embarrassment of her mother is one thing. But when Martha stands up for her family refusing to be bullied by land-grabbing neighbors, the scorn of fellow villagers ignites a powder keg. The story takes a sickening turn as town folk make the only logical conclusion for Martha’s behavior. A woman of great passion and fearlessness is surely in league with the devil.

The book tells of a violent period in American history. The young nation was engaged in eradicating the indigenous population, English settlers were dying in droves from the bloody flux and the pox, and the ambitious said anything to gain stature in the emerging New England, no matter how ruthless. Kathleen Kent’s stunning prose captures the atmosphere of ignorance and hysteria that embodied the Salem witch trials. I was disgusted by the hate that clouded people’s judgment, especially the treatment of children as they were imprisoned for witchcraft. In spite of the persecution of the innocent, I was moved to tears by the love and courage that the Carrier’s gave to one another. There is one simple sentence in the novel that Sarah comes to know as her one, undeniable truth: “I am my mother’s daughter.” By reading the story of The Heretic’s Daughter, we all become Martha Carrier’s legacy.

The Wolves of Andover, Kathleen Kent’s new novel and prequel to The Heretic’s Daughter will be released on 8 November 2010.

Ny månad, nya bokcirklar

En trevlig lunchträff och två nya böcker..

Idag hade jag lunchdate med boktoka. Vi jobbar i samma del av stan, så det var lätt att mötas upp. Det var en mycket trevlig lunch där vi pratade om allt från böcker till politik. Men det jag  blev lite extra glad för var att hon hade två, jättefina, böcker med till mig. Varav en har jag önskat mig lite extra. Det var romanen Skulle jag dö under andra himlar av Johannes Anyuru, som är hans romandebut. Johannes Anyuru är tidigare Augustnominerad för sin diktsamling ”Städerna inuti Hall”. Jag fick även ungdomsboken ”Bara kärleken kan krossa ditt hjärta” av Gunnar Ardelius, en författare jag har skrivit lite om här. Och även om boken.
